SmartRM, incorporated in Delaware, USA, is developing an open source interoperable DRM (digital rights management) platform based on the MPEG-21 standard. The DRM market still is a small software market ($800 million in 2007 expected to grow to little more than $1 billion in 3 years), we consider that an open source interoperable platform has the opportunity to breach in current small, proprietary, market thus allowing anyone to “DRMize” its digital content. The technology is based on Chillout, reference implementation of the new standard developed by the founders of the company. Co-founder of SmartRM is Leonardo Chiariglione, historical head of the MPEG group.
